Review: The Irish Tea Room in Niagara on the Lake, Canada

My husband and I went to Niagara on the Lake for our wedding anniversary.  He surprised me with the trip, and had picked out a lunch place for us to try, partly because it specializes in gluten free offerings, and partly because he wanted to give Irish cuisine a try.  My mom has Irish in her background, and there are some family recipes that have been handed down that we still eat, but there aren't many Irish restaurants around where we live.

The Tea Room is located at the back of an Irish store that sells clothing and other memorabilia.  It has tables inside, as well as an outside patio.  Take-out is also available.  The place was pretty busy the day we were there, but we were seated quickly and our meals didn't take long to arrive.

The Irish Tea Room is not a strictly gluten free eatery, but they take the issue very seriously.  The following is directly from their website regarding gluten free items:

"In The Irish Tea Room we are very strict about the preparation and storage of our gluten free dishes.  In the kitchen we have separate equipment (including a separate oven) for use in cooking gluten free dishes only, which are stored in their own separate containers and cupboards.
Out front in the Tea Room, all of the display cabinets contain gluten free items only to avoid the chance of any cross contamination."

Separate oven, separate containers, dishes, cupboards & display case. Most restaurants don't take this kind of care when offering gluten free options.  Our server was very knowledgeable, and was able to answer all of our questions.  The menu clearly marks all gluten free items, and the entire front display case of pastries & desserts was gluten free.

My husband ordered the not-gluten free Guinness Pie.  Each entrée comes with two salads of your choice.

I ordered the gluten free Boxty, which is a crepe stuffed with curry chicken. I ordered a mixed bean salad and a beet salad as the sides, and the whole meal was divine.  So good that I am going to try and recreate it.

Service was friendly and the atmosphere was relaxed.  There was a large selection of gluten free desserts, so we had to try them.  My husband ordered the cheesecake, and I ordered the Banoffee pie.  Banoffee pie is a banana and toffee pie with whipped cream and chocolate. Ridiculous in the best way possible.

Before leaving, we picked up a gluten free scone mix to take home with us.  When I try it, I'll let you know how it tastes.  I'm also dying to try a recipe found on their website for a Cranberry Almond, which is white chocolate and cranberries mixed with GF cornflakes. Looks and sounds divine.

I have to say, everything from the atmosphere to the service to the food was fantastic at the Irish Tea Room.  The food was reasonably priced, and the small but diverse menu had offerings sure to please most eaters, from gluten free to vegetarian.  The dishes are traditional Irish fare, which to me means good old fashioned comfort food.  Highly recommended.

Gluten Free Dining: Farro Ristorante

Last night, in celebration of passing my thesis defense, we went out to dinner at a local Italian restaurant called Farro Ristorante.  The restaurant is the perfect date-night place, with a sophisticated ambiance and an extensive menu of mouthwatering food.  I was a bit nervous about bringing an almost three year old in, but I was pleasantly surprised to find out that the restaurant is family friendly.  The waiter brought my son a small colouring book when we arrived, and they had high chairs and booster seats available.

Normally, Italian food is a gluten-filled minefield, but not at this restaurant.

Farro makes pasta in house, and they have gluten free pasta available.  They also make gluten free pizza, which is what we ordered for my son.  The gluten free didn't come in kid size, but I didn't mind.  We packed up what my son didn't finish and brought it home.

How was the pizza?  Fantastic.  It was thin crust, with an authentic pizza texture to the crust.  I would say that it was the best gluten free pizza I've ever tried.  My son agreed, as he gobbled down three and a half slices!

We ordered a simple Margherita pizza for him, but since they have an extensive pizza menu, we really could have chosen from several pizzas.  Ditto for the pasta dishes.  And since our son was so engaged with his pizza, my husband and I enjoyed our meals drama free.

My husband ordered Tuscan bean soup to start, followed by bacon wrapped pork medallions with grilled vegetables.  I ordered a mixed green salad and the Gnocchi Gorgonzola  with spinach and sun dried tomatoes.  We would have had dessert, but it was getting late and my son had started rubbing his eyes, so we passed.

On our way out, I noticed that the restaurant has a small section at the back where they sell some specialty food products, including gluten free pasta.

I really enjoyed our dining experience at Farro.  It's not a cheap restaurant, but the prices are reasonable for the quality of the food and the dining experience that the restaurant provides.  They also offer take-out if you call and order in advance, which is a great option for my family.

This is a restaurant that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys good food, and wants more than one gluten free option to choose from.  It's perfect for a date night, a family function, or just an impromptu dinner to celebrate something special.

My only suggestion for the restaurant would be to advertise their gluten free items outright on the menu.  They have a mention of spelt pasta, but no mention of the gluten free options.  I think that they could bring in more business if they did.

Gluten Free in Ottawa, ON & Gatineau, QC

We're going on a road trip!  Next weekend, if the weather cooperates, we're heading to the Gatineau area of Quebec, just across the border from Ottawa, Ontario to visit some friends.  I'm excited about going on a little mini-break and practicing my French again (it's been a while).  I'm also excited to check out their gluten free offerings!  Below is a short list of some of the places I hope to find time to visit:

Zen Kitchen 634 Somerset St. W, Ottawa ON.  The menu states whether an item is gluten free, and most are.  Some even state that they can be prepared gluten free.

The Table Restaurant  1230 Wellington St., Ottawa, ON.  A buffet style vegetarian restaurant that offers gluten-free mains and desserts.

La Dolce Vita 180 Preston St., Ottawa, ON.  A restaurant with a separate gluten free menu including pizza and pasta.  Also offers take-out and delivery.

Patisserie Fine Fidélice 625 de la Gappe Blvd., Gatineau, QC, with another location in Hull.  Offers a range of gluten free baked goods and cakes.  Attached is the English pdf menu.

Casa Nicastro  304 Preston St., Ottawa, ON.  An Italian fine food shop with an entire section dedicated to gluten free foods.

La Boîte à Grains 581 St-Joseph Blvd., Hull, QC. A grocery retailer offering gluten free foods.  English website not as well developed as the French.

Molto Ristorante  131 Promenade du Portage, Gatineau, QC.  Many gluten free menu items, and any pasta dish can be prepared using gluten free pasta.

Just a small sampling of what I've been able to find, but my goal is to visit one grocer, one restaurant, and definitely one bakery.  Quebec has its own brand of gluten free beer as well.  Beer's not my drink of choice, but I am curious to try one and see how it stacks up against a traditional lager.  I'll keep you posted!
