January's Cookbook of the Month: Sweet Debbie's Organic Treats

Welcome to the second year of the Cookbook of the Month Program here at Celiac Baby! Last year was a great year for cookbooks, and the feedback from readers has encouraged me to make some exciting changes to the program this year. There will be monthly giveaways, and more recipes, interviews, and advice from the authors. Like always, my reviews are my personal opinion, not influenced by any outside factors.

I'm so excited to be kicking off another year with a cookbook that takes traditional sweets, and changes them up to be organic and much healthier. The author runs a famous bakery in Los Angeles, Sweet Debbie's Cupcakes, and does much of what she does because her son has food restrictions.

December's Cookbook of the Month: You Won't Believe It's Gluten-Free!

You Won't Believe It's Gluten-Free!: 500 Delicious, Foolproof Recipes for Healthy Living

A pioneer in gluten-free cooking, Roben Ryberg has worked with gluten-free flours for over 15 years. Now, in You Won’t Believe It’s Gluten-Free!, she vastly simplifies the challenges of this special diet-while perfecting the flavor of everyone’s favorite foods. Completely comprehensive, You Won’t Believe It’s Gluten-Free! offers 500 recipes for all kinds of breads and baked goods, plus easy appetizers, soups, entrees, and salads to win over any crowd. It also features desserts for special occasions-even wedding cakes! Unlike the standard use of three or more flour blends, these recipes often call for just one flour, and many recipes include corn, potato, rice, and oat flour variations. This is an essential cooking bible for anyone with celiac disease, wheat allergy, IBS, or other gluten sensitivities.

I decided to end the year off with a review of a cookbook from a few years ago. This book was originally published in 2008, and covers recipes for just about every occasion. I've already gone through my copy and highlighted the recipes I'm looking forward to trying. This book looks as though it has some great recipes!  This seems like the perfect way to end a great year of cookbook reviews.

GIVEAWAY!

Guess what? Like always, I'm giving away a copy. Contest is open to entrants in Canada (excluding Quebec) and the United States. Terms & Conditions can be found in the widget below. Good luck!

American Medical ID Bracelets & A Contest to Win 1 of 2 $50 Gift Cards

Everyone who visits this site knows that my son can't eat gluten. His school bag, lunch box, and personal items are labelled Gluten Free. Still, I always worried about what might happen when all those labelled items weren't in plain site in an emergency situation?

In addition to my son being gluten free, my husband has a life threatening shellfish allergy, and I am allergic to Penicillin. As adults, we sometimes feel that we can advocate for ourselves. Unfortunately, sometimes there are times when you can't advocate for yourself. A person in anaphylactic shock can't tell others that they're having an allergic reaction,  just as someone who may be unconscious can't let a doctor know that they are allergic to a specific medication. Having a prominent visual reminder can alert someone else to a specific condition or allergy, which can be lifesaving.

GIVEAWAY: Gluten Free on a Shoestring Bakes Bread

I announced Nicole Hunn's upcoming book Gluten Free on a Shoestring Bakes Bread as November's cookbook of the month a few days ago, and now I'm excited to announce that I have a copy to give away! This book will be released in December, and one lucky reader will be treated to a FREE copy. How's that for an early Christmas gift?

Here's some more info about the book:

Forget everything you’ve heard about baking gluten-free bread. The revolutionary Gluten-Free on a Shoestring Bakes Bread gives you 100 recipes to satiate your crispy, crunchy, and doughy cravings, gluten-freely and on a shoestring budget.

Ours is a bread-obsessed culture. Whether we’re eating it at every meal or refusing to eat it altogether, bread defines almost every diet, especially the gluten-free community that must avoid it completely. But now, thanks to Nicole Hunn, there will be no more settling for the frozen bread in natural food stores or, worse, pretending that a lettuce leaf is an acceptable alternative when making a sandwich. Readers will rejoice to finally enjoy the rolls, muffins, tortillas, naan, pita chips, scones, and breadsticks they’ve been missing—made even sweeter by the price tag.

Nicole Hunn is the author of the Gluten-Free on a Shoestring series and blog, which has been featured in the New York Times and MSN Money. She has appeared in Living Without and Easy Eats, and on Sirius/XM Radio and ABC News, among others. She lives in Westchester County, New York.

Almond Fresh Review & Deliciously Different Drink Contest!

UPDATE! The giveaway for this contest has been changed FOR THE BETTER! Rather than giving away a coupon for a free product, I will be giving away $20 in coupons for Almond Fresh products to one lucky winner. Better, right? YES! Now keep reading for your chance to enter! If you already entered, your previous entries remain valid.

Many of you who read my blog regularly know that in addition to being gluten free, my son also has a very difficult time with cow's milk. We drink a lot of goat's milk, soy milk, and rice milk around here, and use a ton of dairy-free alternative products for cooking and baking. Still, I have to admit, Almond Milk was never really on my radar as an option. Sure, I saw it on the shelf, taking up space beside the other dairy alternatives, but my eyes would just skim over it to find the product I was already used to buying.

October's Cookbook of the Month: Gluten Free Breakfast, Brunch, and Beyond

This month I chose a cookbook that's a little different from all the others. I sometimes run out of breakfast ideas for the munchkins, or I find myself making the same smoothie several days in a row. I'm a big fan of breakfast and brunch foods, so it sounds like this book might be perfect for my family!

Think it might be perfect for your family too? Enter the giveaway below!

Breakfast is the favorite meal of the day for millions of Americans, but those with a gluten intolerance are out of luck, since many breakfast foods and baked items have been banned from their diet. They must find gluten-free alternatives or go without. For the rising number of Americans who are choosing to follow a gluten-free diet as a healthy lifestyle and for parents experimenting with gluten-free recipes for their families, they, too, are having to do without.
That disappointment will no longer be the case. In Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond, home cooks will discover a variety of gluten-free recipes for their family’s favorite breakfast foods. From light quick breads, muffins, biscuits and scones to tasty pancakes, waffles, coffee cakes and sweet rolls, this collection of 100 recipes will bring breakfast back to the gluten-free table. A tantalizing array of frittatas, quiches, and breakfast casseroles are perfect for any meal of the day. The recipes in Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond are quick and easy to make and yield delicious, satisfying results.
Recipes for homemade all-purpose flour, crepe batter, pancake batter, sweet roll dough, and biscuit dough will give every gluten-free cook the basics for creating delicious dishes of their own.
In addition to great recipes, Gluten-Free Breakfast, Brunch & Beyond will provide cooks with the information they need about gluten-free ingredients, including ingredients to include—and avoid--in their diet and preparing and measuring ingredients. Each recipe chapter will begin with tips to help home cooks create great-tasting gluten-free breakfast specialties to serve from morning to night.

I love sharing my finds with my readers, and this month's book is no exception! Especially with the colder months settling in, sometimes a fruit cup just doesn't cut it. So, here's your chance to win your very own copy! Good luck. Open to participants in Canada and the United States.

Review

The author of this cookbook is a mother of young children, and so am I, and I'm always excited to try kid-friendly recipes. This is a shorter cookbook than some of the really long ones out there, but it still offers a nice range of recipes from breakfast, to mains, one pot meals, desserts, and more. The recipes are designed to be quick and easy to prepare. Some recipes ask for boxed flour or baking mixes, and I'm ok with that because while I do prepare stuff from scratch from time to time, on a day to day basis I need to get food on the table, fast. That often means buying a GF pie crust rather than always making one myself. Nothing wrong with that, especially since I have two kids under the age of five who need to be fed.

From this cookbook, I prepared: Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins (which have now become a staple in my house), Sausage Breakfast Skillet, Chicken Fried Rice, Parmesan Pork Chops, BBQ Chicken, Summer Veggie Medley, Sausage and Peppers, and the One Dish Wonder. The Lemon Squares are on my husband's wish list, and there are a few desserts I need to try!

True to the title, these recipes are family approved. My four year old ate everything without any complaint, and that's pretty impressive. Everything was simple to prepare, and the ingredients were pretty straightforward to find, except for the Bisquick GF mix, which I'm not sure is available in Canada. It didn't hold me back, though. There's nothing super fancy here, just quick and easy to prepare meals that most kids will enjoy.

This cookbook is great for families, but would also be wonderful for someone new to gluten free who isn't a strong cook to begin with. I get a lot of questions from people who just never learned to cook much growing up, and now are faced with learning how to do it gluten free. They want to enjoy familiar foods, but aren't sure how to prepare them. This book would be a great start.

Guess What? Pam Jordan has graciously offered to give a copy away to 1 lucky reader! Open to residents of Canada and the United States. Enter below.

Giveaway: Pizza Slice Spice Gluten Free Pizza Toppings

When I heard about Pizza Slice Spice, I thought it was a fun way to add some life to a traditional slice of pizza. My husband thought it was genius! The company owners managed to take something tried and true, like pizza, and add a new twist on an old favourite.

Pizza Slice Spice is a line of pizza seasonings that you shake on pizza to give it a little added "kick." Fat free, under 5 calories, all natural, Kosher, and Certified Gluten Free, this product is great for people with food restrictions who don't want to sacrifice flavour. I'm always wary when products claim to be gluten free, but Pizza Slice Spice is certified, which makes me a happy lady. It comes in four flavours, based on some of the most popular pizza flavours: Bacon Cheddar Pizza, Buffalo Wing, Parmesan Garlic, and Barbeque. These inexpensive spice blends allow users to elevate a plain slice of pizza to the next level, and allows every person at the table to enjoy a different flavour experience, without the added cost of purchasing different pizzas to suit individual tastes.

Bacon Cheddar Pizza
"All natural bacon flavor sizzles with the fresh taste of aged Vermont Cheddar. A pinch of parsley, chives and onion rounds out this unique Pizza Slice Spice. A wallop of deliciousness with only three calories per serving."

Buffalo Wing
"Buffalo wings and pizza? It might not be an obvious combination, but you’ll soon be addicted to the killer combination of the all-natural ingredients in this remarkably inventive and zesty Buffalo "hot sauce" spice."

Parmesan Garlic
"Made with authentic, aged parmesan cheese and fresh garlic our special spice is the perfect combination of celebrated Italian flavors."

Barbeque

"Using all-natural ingredients and a secret recipe of flavor combinations, our Barbeque Pizza Slice Spice is deliciously sweet and smoky--tasting of sugary molasses and vine ripened tomatoes, topped with fresh garden hints of onion and garlic."

Sound delicious? Of course it does! Want to win a prize pack of all four flavours? Enter to win below! Contest is open to residents of the United States. No purchase necessary.

Back to School with Oliver's Labels & A Giveaway!

I've talked about Oliver's Labels on the blog before because I think they're one of the best label companies out there when it comes to allergy and food awareness labels, particularly for kids and teens. I first used their items when my son was starting daycare and we needed to label his clothing for the first time. Shortly after that, my son got sick and we realized that he couldn't eat gluten or dairy, and we needed to upgrade his stickers for all his food containers. Oliver's Labels had the best selection of allergy labels, including specific ones that say No Gluten and No Dairy. It's been over two years, and those labels are still as good as new, even though his clothes have been handed down to his little brother.

My son starts kindergarten in September, and he's going to be bringing his own lunch to school. We've been working hard to make sure that he knows not to accept food from other kids, but it's important that his teacher and other staff members also know that he's gluten free, so that he's not accidentally given food that contains ingredients that will make him sick.  When he goes on field trips or if there's a supply teacher in, any new staff he comes in contact with also needs to know that he's gluten and dairy free. That's where the labels come in handy, as a visual reminder of his food restrictions.

My son will be wearing a uniform, with shirts and sweaters that look identical to everyone else's. He's going to need labels for everything from his shirts, to jackets, to back pack, lunch bag, shoes, pencil cases...you get the idea. Oliver's Labels has specific labels for clothing, shoes, water bottles, etc., that are guaranteed to stay put even after repeated trips through the washing machine or dishwasher. The original labels are microwaveable, fridge, and freezer safe on top of everything else.  And it's all available in a convenient Back to School pack that's customizable and includes everything you need for back to school.  The best part, they look good, they're affordable, and they have clothing labels don't have to be ironed on.

I don't iron.

The school package offers 95 labels, distributed among clothing labels, shoe labels, mini labels, original labels, original labels and bag tags. They're also customizable, so the package can be mixed and matched to suit anyone's individual needs.  The labels include a free Found-It code, that helps lost items get returned to their rightful owners.

Since there are 40 designs to choose from, I chose Superheroes for the shoe tags, transportation for the mini tags, sports for the clothing labels, and No Gluten for the rest.  I chose designs that are age appropriate for my little guy, but they have over 40 designs to choose from, ranging from preschool to teenage appropriate styles, and even sophisticated adult designs.

My son was so excited to get "stickers" with his name on them, we've already labelled everything for school.

Want to win your very own school package for your child?  Giveaway is open to readers in Canada and the United States. Participants are only eligible to win once, which means that if you win on my blog, you are not eligible to win on another blog participating in this campaign. Enter below!

I was provided a complimentary school package by the company in return for an honest product review. I have not been otherwise compensated for this post.
